Q: Is Weight Watchers a good program for weight loss? -Aspen P.
A: Weight Watchers has been a storied company in the weight loss industry for a long time and has helped many people lose weight. Even those who haven’t heard of the points system have certainly heard of Weight Watchers. Our purpose in writing these articles is to analyze these programs and give our unbiased recommendation.
Weight Watchers has done a great job of simplifying their diet program. The points system makes it easy for people to understand how much food they should be eating. It doesn’t focus on calories, but the points system gets you to eat at the right calorie level for weight loss. Weight Watchers also makes sure you have the support system in place to accomplish your weight loss goals. Weight Watchers does a great job of getting people to their meetings and helping them stay accountable for the number of points they should be eating.
At one point in time, Weight Watchers was a better diet because it required people to eat healthy food. They may still recommend healthy food, but the focus is really on staying within your points totals for that day. We believe this was done to make the diet more mainstream and get more people to comply with the diet program. Generally, people are overweight because they don’t have good nutrition habits. Weight Watchers knew this and realized how difficult it was to change those habits. So, instead, they decided to allow people to eat whatever they wanted as long as their calories remained in the range needed for weight loss. The difficulty with the points system is that it doesn’t ensure that people are getting proper nutrition. In addition to limited healthy eating protocols, Weight Watchers doesn’t aggressively push the issue of exercise.
We are never going to discourage you from taking action in regards to your health. For some, a few pounds of weight loss may be the key to a more complete and full life. We would just recommend a more complete program that requires eating food with high nutrition value, and decreasing intake of foods that have little or no nutritional value. We would also recommend a program that is more focused on exercise, one that teaches you how to exercise correctly for optimal results.
The problem is that marketers are looking for the easiest way for people to lose weight, because many believe that determines whether a fitness program is successful. But weight loss is just one component of fitness. The true key to fitness is changing unhealthy behaviors and eliminating them from your life.
