I was watching Biggest Loser last night and saw a genuine Jillian Michaels emotional breakthrough with one of the contestants. I usually don’t watch Biggest Loser because I am not a fan of reality television and the weigh-ins take forever but I got sucked in this time by Jillian’s attempt to breakdown this contestant.
If you haven’t seen the show what Jillian does to cause these breakthrough’s is she put them through a workout and a verbal trashing that causes them to completely breakdown emotionally and spill their guts about what caused them to become obese. The contestant then embraces the cause of their obesity and this is suppose to help them overcome it.
I am not sure in the show if they give the contestant an actual protocol for overcoming the emotional baggage they are carrying or if it is enough just to make sure that it is aired to the world. I am not even sure that Jillian is qualified to help the contestants work through these issues. But the point is made on the show that for many people the biggest hurdle to getting fit isn’t eating healthy and exercising it is actually facing the demons that got them there in the first place.
Many of the people I have tried to help accomplish the goal of getting fit that quit or gave up couldn’t face the reality of why they had become obese and what it was going to take to change. Everyone has a different reason for being obese but for some people it is years and years of verbal, physical, or sexual abuse by a family member or spouse. For others obesity is an emotional out that eliminates their responsible for their success in their career and in regards to relationships. Don’t get me wrong everyone that is obese doesn’t have some major issue that needs to be addressed. For some people it is just a matter of not making their personal health a priority.
The reality is if you are going to accomplish your goal of getting into your ideal shape you are going to have to face the challenges that got you there.
