For fourteen years I have been working on staying fit personally and helping others get fit. Getting fit took me from being an overweight, uncomfortable, sick teenager and changed me into a confident, productive, healthy young adult. Ever since then it has been my mission to share my experience with others and teach them about what I have learned over the past 14 years about what it takes to get fit and stay fit.
How my quest to get fit all began… If it wasn’t enough to be uncomfortable with being in my own skin because I was an obese pre-teen I was literally uncomfortable in my own skin most of the time from being so unhealthy. During the six cold months of the year I had chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. On top of that I suffered from a constant upset stomach year round.
Don’t get me wrong my appearance was greatly affecting my confidence, friendships, and overall mood. Every once in awhile the ridicule about being fat got to me and I lost my cool.
I knew I had to do something to change my situation. I decided I would start exercising. I decided to start running. I can remember what it was like trying to run one mile without stopping. I would have to close my eyes when I ran just to deal with the pain. It took some time to actually run one mile but I did it. From there I started to train with some local runners around my age. It was a difficult journey and there were many times I ended up standing over a garbage can trying to keep down the last meal I had eaten. I got in better shape but still wasn’t very confident in my appearance and was still getting sick regularly.
As I developed more as an athlete I got involved in lifting weights. I worked extremely hard to get as strong and fast as possible. It took sometime but I started to develop some muscle and started to see more and more of it as my body fat decreased. I started to get more confident in my appearance during this time. My relationship with those around me started to change. I started making more friends and every now and then the opposite sex was interested in me. The challenge was I still was getting sick.
Learning how to eat healthy took a long time to learn. Initially I thought inhaling anything and everything was the best strategy. Then when I wanted to lose weight I would just stop eating all together. Protein, fat, and carbs meant little to nothing to me. To be honest, it took me almost 10 years to acknowledge the impact nutrition had on my workouts and appearance. Eventually, I had to give in and realize I couldn’t cover up a high calories, super unhealthy meal, with a hard workout.
As I learned to eat healthier I started to see significant changes in how my body responded to food. I got sick less often and progressed to the point that I haven’t seen a doctor in 7 years for an illness. No flu’s, strep, bronchitis, or pneumonia. You can’t imagine how unbelievable this truly is because I was literally sick all the time before I made these changes.
Fitness for me is a journey that will never end. Everyday I have to set new goals and work to eliminate bad habits and maintain the good ones I have created.
My hope is that I will be able to help as many individuals as possible change their mindset towards exercise and nutrition. Getting fit changes lives. Start living the life you have always dreamed of having and look and feel the way you want.
